Counting Human Age: Real versus Hypothetic

Nature recently published a research paper entitled “Average remaining lifetimes can increase as human population age” (Vol.435 page 811-813). This paper called for attention to be given to a new measure of age – the median age of the population standardized for the expected remaining years of life. This study also claimed that human populations can grow younger in some periods when adjusted with this new age definition. However, examination of this paper revealed some fundamental flaws in its statistical analyses and data presentation. Questions were also raised regarding the application of this new age in recording human lifetimes and the effectiveness of increasing retirement age as a solution for the aging problem in human population.
