Stop Losing Superiority in Discovery and Innovation
It was proposed that a “Manhattan Project” is needed to stop the superiority shift in discovery and innovation from US to other countries (Science 309:245-246, 2005). However, such a large project may preserve just a few “top” researches but cannot overcome the widespread “grass root” problems. Instead, changing the modern but unhealthy attitude and culture of research in highly developed countries may hold a key solution to the losing superiority in discovery and innovation. Freedom in searching and communicating truth is more important than funding for making and making known truly “radical” discovery and innovation.

A Revelation of Top Journals’ Rejections on Novel Discoveries
Scientists often wish to communicate their discoveries through the so-called “top” journals. Many did so because it pays back much better in terms of peer recognition and citation rate than publishing in the so-called “non-top” journals. However, one drawback of this communication strategy is the potential delay in publishing novel discoveries or, even worse, the “scooping” of true pioneers by imitators. The revelation made here shows a dark journey in seeking publication in the “top” journals for the novel discoveries. It exposes the strong tradition of the “top” journals in rejecting discoveries whose novelties are really ahead of their later trendy time. It may teach an important lesson for some true pioneers to rethink their strategies for communicating their “radical” discoveries and novel innovations.
