Extending Life Span by SENS: Does It Make a Logical Sense?
ABSTRACT
In the history of human life there has been many times that some people claimed the finding of fountain for youth. However, the sad truth is that not only ordinary people but also immortality inventors died from natural causes. Now with the advancement of science and technology and especially with the scattered good news of life span extension in many different organisms the hope of living longer if not forever is once again lighted up. A movement called “Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence” (SENS) was even started by de Grey whose ambition is not ambiguous at all as shown by most other mainstream gerontologists/biogerontologists. He claims that, if enough money is given to his research, he can realize the human dream of living longer by extending human life span to 1000 at the minimum. Better than a simple life span extension, he claims that this extended life span will compose largely the healthy happy time free of any frail. In fact, his request of money is not that big for such a great benefit to humanity, just 100 millions a year for 10 years so that he can first demonstrate his SENS approach in mouse (another side-benefit for mouse). Then he believe his effort on extending the life span of human being will be something like “escaping velocity” and within another 15 years he will achieve his goal of allowing human essentially to live indefinitely. However, does this SENS approach make a logical sense? What aging processes does SENS really sense? Is SENS an anti-aging medicine or at most an age-fixer? Will age-fixing by SENS be a cost-reduction or a cost-burden for human society? Is aging really a disease that can be cured like an infection? How to quickly prove or disapprove SENS as a valid or effective anti-aging therapy? This essay tries to answer these urgent and general questions first.
